Senior Living Matriarch Receives St. Louis Archdiocese Award

Founder of Twin Oaks Senior Living to receive Comforter/Nurturer Award during Aug. 2 Ceremony

O’FALLON, MO (July 2015) – Mary Ann Huber, who with her husband William founded Twin Oaks Senior Living from their home in O’Fallon, will be honored next month for her lifelong care of others.

Huber will receive the St. Louis Archdiocese Comforter/Nurturer Award during the 2015 Catholic Women’s Recognition Ceremony on Aug. 2. The event each year honors Catholic women who have inspired others through their unique and vital contributions both to the Church in St. Louis and the broader community.

Huber was nominated by Sarah Beams, director of lay pastoral ministry at Assumption Parish, where the Huber family has been parishioners for decades.

“Mary Ann has been a beautiful example of a comforter/nurturer her entire life,” Beams said.

When she was 35 years old and caring for four children, Huber began studying to be a nurse. In 1981, she and her husband opened their home as an assisted living facility. Today, Twin Oaks Senior Living is home to hundreds of older adults on its three campuses in O’Fallon and Wentzville.

At 81 years old, Huber shows no sign of stopping. At Twin Oaks Estate she leads in praying the rosary, communion services, and she comforts, listens, and prays with residents. She also maintains the Mary Queen of Peace shrine, which she had erected in O’Fallon near Twin Oaks Estate.

At Assumption Parish she volunteers at funeral luncheons, prays during the times of Eucharistic Adoration, and serves as a church cleaner and Eucharistic minister. Beams said Huber also served on the Liturgical Design Committee in 2004 and helped design a new church space where all could come to deepen their relationship with God. She has also financially supported the parish during its capital improvement campaigns for a new church and new school facilities.

“There is a built-in, natural joy that only comes from helping others,” Huber said.

Huber’s daughter Kathy Blattel said that being a caregiver is just second nature for her mother.

“The older I get, the more I see how many people have been influenced by my mom,” Blattel said. “People from church, the Twin Oaks staff, even people I don’t know will tell me how amazing she is. I’m so happy that others have been able to experience what a wonderful woman she is and to share the love and spirituality she conveys. It’s really humbling.”

During the award ceremony on Aug. 2 Huber will receive her award from St. Louis Archbishop Robert J. Carlson and Archdiocese Chancellor Nancy Werner. The ceremony will be held at St. Joseph Parish, 567 St. Joseph Lane in Manchester, MO.
